1.5 Billion Prepaid Subscribers Worldwide
Informa Telecoms & Media says that prepaid subscriptions worldwide passed the 1.5 billion milestone at the beginning of July 2006, as mobile subscriptions worldwide approach the 2.5 billion mark. Latest research from Informa reports the share of prepaid subscriptions increasing to an estimated 61.8% of total subscriptions, up from 58.6% at the end of June 2005. LG Electronics has announced the upcoming availability of new versions of its Chocolate handset. Slated for release in the UK across Q3 and Q4 of 2006, the latest versions of the million-selling phone include white and pink handsets and new 'premium' Chocolate phones with unique design variations and enhanced technical specifications which will be available before the end of the year.

The Usable Products Company has issued a study of Amp'd Kyocera Angel, Sprint LG Fusic, and Verizon Samsung SCH-a950 handsets from a usability perspective. Both LG's Fusic and Samsung's SCH-a950 had external controls for playing music while the handset was closed. Success rates for external controls were 62% and 67%, respectively. Weiss noted, "If more than a third of consumers fail at using these phones as media players, the phones will flop in the market."

Women dominate mobile phone gaming market
Women like to play games on mobile phones more than men, according to an analyst firm that has studied the gender gaming habits. Apparently, Women represent 59 percent of US mobile gamers, says the study released by market research and consulting firm Parks Associates. The report, "Electronic Gaming in the Digital Home," also reveals females comprise 61 percent of those who play mobile games between one and four hours monthly, and 58 percent of those who spend more than four hours per month playing games on a mobile phone.
